Sterilizing your gear? Empty Sterilizing your gear?

Post by eahuntley Fri Dec 29, 2017 7:34 am

Has anyone ever had to sterilize thier gear? A friend of mine acquired a somewhat large quantity of some gear(Vet stuff maybe?) and he was told(by the supplier) he needed to sterilize it by boiling it (putting it in smaller bottles and putting the bottle in boiling water) Has anyone alse ever had to do this? Is this for real? if it is for real how long do you have to boil it for?

sounds like he got a jug of ip gear. if this is the case it is recommended to rebottle it and sterilize it when doing so. i would recommend he get a whatmann filter and also filter the gear through that when rebottling it. he should also make sure to get some precaped sterile vials in either 10ml or 20ml size. when puting the bottles in boiling water you need to make sure you stick an 18g needle through the rubber stopper to act as a vent for the steam to escape. generally what i have heard is that about 20minutes should be sufficient to sterilize the gear but not 100% sure on this so i would recommend getting someone elses opinion on that.

If your friend is really concerned about bacteria. He should bake it @ 250-275 for 30 ins. and also run it through a 0.2um syringe filter to really get rid of any bacteria.

Personally I wouldn't buy from anyone that tells me I have to sterilize my gear.

yeah that is definately ip gear. its generally good stuff as long as you do filter and sterilize it. the reason for this process is because the plastic bottles it comes in cant be guaranteed to be sterile when they are filled.

For years I have grown mushrooms as a hobbie,,, and what you learn quickly is that it isn't easy to Sterilize... Boiling or baking a liquid for 20-30min doesn't guarentee that it's sterile... To Completely sterilize liquids in bottles you have to use a Pressure cooker or Autoclave @ 15lbs for 45min to be completely sure.... Since you don't want water to get into the bottle baking would be best...

Bake it for 45min @ 250*.. Some may say this is over kill but I personlly know it's not from experience... After it has cooled you will then use the whatman filter to put into your sterile bottle with the 1-2%BA in it...

Certainly filtering with .2micron whatman filter after you boil the bottle helps with alot of bacteria but if you're talking sterilizing just by boiling it will never be perfect...
